Caminito del Rey Restoration

Caminito del Rey

There were plans for restoring the Caminito del Rey since the early 2000’s but because of the lack of funding, these plans were postponed.

In February 2014, the Provincial Deputation of Malaga has begun the process of awarding the works for the complete restoration of the walkway to the local company Construcciones Sando. The costs of the renovation have been estimated to 2,244,101 euros.

Work on the pathway has started on the 13th of March 2014 in a ceremonial setting by a team of alpinists. It is estimated that the restoration works will last for ten months, thus the pathway could be open for the general public at the beginning of 2015.

The construction technique employed to the renovation of the Caminito del Rey will be very similar to that used at its construction between 1901 and 1905 meaning alpinists will execute the works while hanging on the wall.

Caminito del Rey RestaurationThe major difference is represented by the various safety features that will make its renovation much more secure than a century ago. Also, the supply of building materials will be deployed by a helicopter instead of alpinists themselves.

The renovated Caminito del Rey will be made of wood panels
with metal anchors drilled into the wall.
One of the most interesting features is represented by the occasional glass floors above the Gorge of Gaitanes at 100 meters above the river.
